Coding apps for kids, compared

There are three main ways kids tell a computer what to do: describing it in words, snapping blocks, or typing code. Here's where popular tools sit, so you can pick by your kid's age and patience.

How to choose

Under 8?

Picture blocks or plain words work best. Reading and typing are the real limits at this age, so keep sessions short and stay close.

Loves puzzles?

Course-style tools with levels to solve suit kids who like a clear next step and a right answer.

Has big game ideas?

Open-ended tools, where kids decide what to make, suit inventors. Blocks and words both work. See block coding vs. AI coding.

Ready to type?

Typed code opens the most doors. Older kids who read and type comfortably can start with JavaScript, Python or Luau.
