Platformer games

Make a platformer game

Run, jump, land, repeat. A platformer is a game where your hero jumps between platforms to reach a goal. Here are the parts, and how to make them feel just right.

Why jumps feel good, or don't

Two numbers decide every jump. Jump power pushes your hero up. Gravity pulls them back down a little more every moment. Together they draw a curve, called an arc.

  • Jump feels floaty? “Make gravity stronger.”
  • Can't reach the platform? “Make the jump a bit higher.”
  • Too hard to land? “Let me steer while I'm in the air.”
Two jump arcs: a tall floaty one with weak gravity and a short snappy one with strong gravity. weak gravity strong gravity

Draw a level by hand, then use it in your game.

Draw your own level

In the drawing studio's Levels tab you can place a start, platforms, coins, springs, monsters and a goal, then send the level to your game. Make the first jump easy and the last one tricky. Good levels teach a move before they test it.
