Racing games

Make your own racing game

Racing games are great first games: you can feel every change the moment you press go. Start from a racer below, then tune it lap by lap.

Six things to tune on your track

  1. Laps. “Make the race five laps instead of three.”
  2. Speed. “My kart is too slow on the straight bits.” Speed is a number in the code, called a variable.
  3. Boost pads. “Add glowing pads that give a short boost.”
  4. Rivals. “Make the other racers a little slower so I can win sometimes.”
  5. Track look. “Turn the track into chocolate with sprinkles on the sides.”
  6. Finish line. “Show my time and do a confetti burst when I finish.”

A trick racing game makers use

Racing feels fair when rivals are close behind you. Game makers call this rubber-banding: racers far behind speed up a little, and racers in front slow down a little. Ask for it with “keep the other racers close to me”, then play-test to see if it still feels like a real race.
