Cozy games

Make a cozy game

Not every game needs a race or a boss. Cozy games are about caring for things, making things and taking your time. Lots of grown-ups play them too.

The Axolotl Café starter game
Axolotl CaféServe hungry animals the food they want before they wander off.

Recipe: one cozy game

Serves: you and everyone you share it with

Ingredients

  • 1 friendly hero
  • 1 small, safe place (a café, a garden, a pond)
  • 3 or 4 little jobs to do
  • A handful of thank-yous
  • Soft colors and a gentle song
  • No timers, unless you want one

Method

  1. Pick your place. “Make a café on a cloud.”
  2. Add visitors who want something. “Animals walk in and show the food they want in a bubble.”
  3. Give the player a way to help. “Tap the right food to serve it.”
  4. Add a happy reaction. “When they get their food, they do a little hop and hearts float up.”
  5. Let it grow. “Every five customers, unlock a new kind of cake.”
  6. Season with sound. Make a calm tune in the Sound Studio.

Why cozy games are good to make

Cozy games are made of small rules that stack up: if the bear wants honey and you serve honey, then the bear is happy. Programmers call those conditions. Every new visitor or job is another rule, so the game grows a piece at a time, and nothing is ever lost.
